Electoral services in Wychavon are looking for staff to work at polling stations on Thursday 6 May. Due to covid-19 restrictions they need to employ more staff than usual.

Poll clerk positions are available at stations across Wychavon, from 6am to 10pm. A Poll Clerk would be paid £180 and would be allocated to work with an experienced Presiding Officer.

It’s a day out, getting to know our district and residents. The role involves greeting electors, issuing ballot papers, keeping the station clean and maintaining queues. Full training will be given online before polling day.

All staff will be provided with masks and other PPE to protect them against Covid-19. Electors will be asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

OVERGROWN HEDGES AND TREES BORDERING ROADS AND PATHS

Dear Parishioners,
You may not be aware that there are strict rules governing the growth of trees and hedging bordering paths and roads.

1. There should be clearance of at least 2.2m (7’ 2’’) above a footway, pavement, or verge to allow pedestrians free passage.

2. Hedges/vegetation should be cut back to the boundary line so as not to overhang or encroach onto the highway (meaning carriageway, footway or verge)

We would request that you check any of your boundaries to make sure that you are compliant with the above.

It is very easy for hedges to get thicker just by a little bit each year, despite being cut back regularly, to the extent that they eventually take up quite a lot of space on a pavement. That hedge may require some radical pruning to put it back where it should be. Indeed, your hedges may need more than one pruning session to keep them inside your boundary line.

All hedge/ tree cutting should be completed by 1st March.

NB Health and Safety take precedence so wherever there is a danger to the public caused by overgrown hedges they can be dealt with irrespective of date.

There is a process to be followed as shown below:

– If required, the Parish Council will send a letter to individual landowners to notify them that their hedges/trees need some remedial work.

– If the problem is not rectified then the matter would be passed to County Highways. They will then contact the Landowner to ask for that work to be done. If not completed within a certain time period they will undertake the work themselves and may then present a bill to the landowner.

Wyre Piddle Parish Council 

Pershore Infrastructure Improvement Scheme

Works on all elements of the Pershore Infrastructure Improvement Scheme have accelerated since the return to sites, following the Christmas shutdown.

Work on Pinvin Junction has now been completed and improvements to traffic flows through the junction have had an immediate impact. The contractor has moved and has set up a site compound on the south side of the new proposed Link Road and work is due to start imminently.

Persimmon Homes has closed Wyre Road for six weeks to complete junction improvements to Station Road / Wyre Road. This junction will eventually allow traffic travelling north out of Pershore to use the Wyre Road and the new Link Road to gain access to the A44. Once the Link Road is open, Wyre Road will become the A4104 and Station Road will become the B4083.

Further improvements to Wyre Road will include the provision of a cycleway and footway on the northern side, the installation of a new kerb line, improvements to drainage and additional streetlighting. The speed limit for Wyre Road and the new Link Road will become 40mph, which for Wyre Road is a reduction from the National Speed Limit currently in place.

Following approval by Wychavon District Council, some hedgerow removal has taken place on the north section of Wyre Road, in advance of the main contract.

A section of hedge adjacent to properties in Mirabelle Gardens has been left in place to provide security and screening and will not be removed until later in the year. A replacement fence, hedge and trees will be installed along the new boundary line, following completion of the works.

Temporary fencing has been erected behind the removed hedge and material from the hedge has been used to provide reptile shelter, following advice from ecologists and in consultation with local members, the town council and the Wildlife Trust. Photos are available on the County Council website.

The main contract to install the new cycle/footway on Wyre Road will start in the summer. Once completed a continuous cycle/footway will link Station Road and the new Link Road.

We will provide another update, ahead of works starting in the summer, which will provide more detail about the scheduling of the works on Wyre Road.

Consultation on SWDP Review sustainability appraisal

A public consultation has started on an important document supporting the development of new homes across South Worcestershire over the next two decades.

The sustainability appraisal sets out how sites and policies in the revised South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP) balance economic and social factors with protecting the environment, which is officially referred to as sustainable development principles.

Where it is not possible to meet sustainable development principles, the sustainability appraisal explains how the impacts can either be lessened or achieved with certain changes.

The document was first published in autumn 2019 alongside the preferred sites for development in the revised SWDP. In response to the thousands of comments received to that consultation, and to take into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sustainability appraisal has now been updated and is out for consultation again.

The consultation runs from 1 March to 19 April and people can have their say by visiting www.swdevelopmentplan.org where they can read the document in full and respond to the online survey.

The consultation is not considering proposed sites for development or polices in the revised SWDP. Comments submitted on these subjects will not be considered.

A further round of consultation on the plan overall is expected to start in October 2021 when the first draft of the revised SWDP is published. It will then be submitted to the Secretary of State in February 2022 for independent public examination, which is expected to take place later that year.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, Chair of the SWDP Joint Advisory Panel, said: “The updated sustainability appraisal is an important document which shows how we will meet the requirements for new housing and economic development, while balancing our responsibilities to the environment and helping to tackle climate change.”

The revised SWDP sets out how a Government requirement to build another 14,000 new homes across Malvern Hills District, Worcester City and Wychavon District by 2041 will be met. This is on top of the need for 28,400 new homes by 2030, more than half of which have already been built, set out in the current plan.
